What's the Fashion of the New Creation?
Clothe yourselves, all of you, with humility toward one another, for God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble. Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you, casting all your anxieties on him because he cares for you.
1 Peter 5:5b-7 (ESV)
Those properly dressed in God’s kingdom are wearing humility. They are not competing for attention and vying for position. They have come to know a Father who is so big that they are not tempted to suppress themselves. Many trying to look humble are busy beating themselves down in order for God to be noticed. That is evidence of having a small God. Humanity does not have to be diminished in order for divinity to be seen as superior. Such efforts are false humility and look as cheap and out of place as overalls and sneakers at a President’s ball.
True humility submits to reality as God reveals it. For instance, younger leaders are to be subject to the elders. All believers are to submit to the delegated institutions God has ordained to structure society. Individual members of the body are to submit to each other recognizing their various gifts and callings. Maybe the most revealing evidence of humility is the absence of the anxiety that is caused by trying to live independently of God and his agents of grace. Worry shouts independence! When we have deluded ourselves into believing that we can control the circumstances of life, and when we become the source of our own needed supplies, we have exalted ourselves beyond measure and stand exposed as “out of style.”
It is God’s glory to sustain his own. He wants to be our protector and supplier. He delights in delighting us. He wants to exalt us as humans who are designed to enjoy him and work with him in developing creation, but he likes being God. When we take over his role, we are acting like gods and humility becomes a religious act, void of power and grace.
If you have been dressed incorrectly, take a long good look at the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. He is so big and so good that you will not have to help him do his job. You will look great clothed in humility.
