The old system under the law of Moses was only a shadow, a dim preview of the good things to come, not the good things themselves...
Hebrews 10:1 (NLT)
The essence of the Epistle to the Hebrews is brought to life in these messages delivered by Dudley Hall at Sojourn Church in Carrollton, Texas.
The Hebrews to whom the letter was addressed were Jewish Christians who were facing persecution not only from the Romans for being Jews, but also from other Jews for being followers of Christ. As a result they were tempted to go back to the old Jewish way of life, to relating to God through the old covenant, to measuring life by Old Testament law. The author exhorts them that there is no going back. The Old Testament presented shadows of true reality, pointing towards the substance. The New Testament reveals the substance as the person of Jesus Christ.
Far from a history lesson, this temptation to go back to the law, to embrace the shadows rather than the substance, transcends time and ethnicity. Even today, we look for the principles to follow, the steps to a better life. Laws and principles and steps are no substitute for the real relationship offered by embracing the substance. In this series, through the pages of the book of Hebrews, you will be introduced to the presence of the Living Word. Once you encounter the true substance of Jesus, you can never go back to the shadows.
